Finding Termites in Your Company

The worst thing that could ever happen to any company is experience successive resignations which could not be explained. It is usually considered a paralyzing loss though not really financially worrisome. Some business owners may welcome the idea and simply think that it's time for change while others go through a frenzy and feel so frustrated.

When one or two leaves out of a hundred, it is really not that noticeable. It's just a pace that a company goes through. No love lost at that. But if the succession becomes more prominent, then there's something wrong.

If you're the owner of the company and could see nothing wrong with the amenities that you provide, you'd wonder what's going on. Upon taking a closer look, maybe you'd get to realize that despite all the benefits that you give your employees they're still opting to leave. It is then that you realize that your organization had been infiltrated by a termite.

Though the term doesn't really mean that you have been infested by vicious insects who normally feed on wood, it means that you've got a snitch in your group that aims to eat up the structure of the company and would eventually cause your downfall.

This is no longer a new story. Very seldom would we find companies who are able to sustain the organization well having a person like this around. But how are you able to see them? Usually it's always too late before you actually do. They're usually the ones who are left standing on top of the ruble - which, happens to be your organization.

Sometimes, companies tend to break down because the owner was not cautious enough in dealing with the situation. No one really gets to know which side is right. Not until you've seen the consequences of your choices. The choice is really up to you.

You should have keen senses and really feel at heart who you're going listening to. Each employee is important in an organization. You really don't have to take sides. But it helps to listen to both sides and try and weigh a decision you could call your own instead of riding along to someone else's. Morale is boosted whenever your people feel that you're being fair.

You don't have to pamper your people too much that you'd end up having a spoiled bunch who simply produce awful headaches. You would tend to get abused that way. What I'm trying to point out, as you might be somebody who's going through this right now, is that you still have time. All you have to do is try to feel your way through.

I need a "Real" Assistant!

I was playing golf one day with a man whom I had just met. It was one of those days when your partner suddenly decides not to show up due to some urgent matter. So, not wanting to totally spoil my day, I played with this elderly man whom I guess was about a few years older than I was.

I said hello and we started having this candid conversation about how things were going in our respective offices. And in the middle of our conversation, this new friend of mine got a call, apparently from his office, and after a while he came back to me complaining about his office assistant.

He told me how he's having difficulty with this particular person and further complained that he's paying so much for inefficiency.

"How about you?" he then turned to me. "You seem to have your office well taken."

I smiled back at him.

"And what are you smiling at?" He asked.

I just said, "Well, I've resolved that problem a long time ago when I fired my assistant and decided not to get a replacement."

I'll never forget how his jaw dropped when I said I didn't get a replacement. Feeling that I had to explain I said, "I had the same problem as yours before. I felt I was being robbed paying someone on a regular basis, showering him or her with benefits and even overtime pay at times. My main problem then was I required different skills and if I'd try to satisfy that need of mine, I'll end up hiring too many people which is something I didn't need and couldn't afford at the time."

The fellow was now listening keenly to me, waiting how my story goes. I went on saying, "I started outsourcing and there I hit 2 birds with one shot. I got the skills that I needed and I was only talking to one person!" I continued telling him how outsourcing made life better for me and described how my business benefited much from it.

My story struck the old man well that he suddenly stood up and walked to leave.

I said, "Hey, where are you going?"

He yelled back at me saying, "To my office. Got to fire that assistant of mine right away. I need a real assistant."
