Is Branding Important to you?
Last night I was of all places, visiting a client who had a taxi firm, and wanted a website, for his business. The client's offices were small, compared with their fleet of cars, and they wanted a professional website that would get them more bookings online.
My firm's expertise is in raising the profile of businesses, particularly in the high street, and several years ago I launched Catering for your PR, to SMEs and we have the professionalism that your business may need in the marketplace.
Maurice Watts had invited me to meet in the minicab firm, and the owners were sharp and wanted to barter the price we were delivering. and have you heard that expression ... you buy peanuts and you get peanuts?
The package that we deliver, is that clients not only get a website that is fully functional, with shopping cart linked to Paypal and their merchant bank account, but also visible on Google, where it can be found. The web site is sold with the content added to the customer's requirements, and the ongoing maintenance costs of search engine optimisation, including blogging.
These packages are not cheap, and anyone can go to any country to outsource the project, but will they get the brains that we have in marketing it, I think not? And why not? We are British marketeers and know from both a cultural perspective and a business approach the best way to market your business here.
Here I was talking to these two seasoned businessmen, who had asked my colleague to bid on a web site on the net, that was so simply made, and consequently they got a low price of £500, because the site they had chosen had no functionality at all.
Yet the twist came when they had chosen another site, which was fully functional, and in my judgement would cost at least £1500, but they were adamant on £500. It is ridiculous but typically market trader, in culture.
We argued about the price, and I had to discount to a point, but the principal owner was still being unflexible, and we almost left without achieving the sale. Do you know what I mean?
I mentioned that this was all about branding, promotion and that it would take their business into a new area, fast forward their systems, into a growth in both corporate and airport transfers.
We explained to them that taking us, rather than an offshore firm to brand their marketing, was far wiser, and then I delivered, the coup d'etat, the punch line that a .tel domain name would deliver them a lot futher than their competition, and set them up with their feet apart. They could buy the domain name online, and they listened, and loved it.
They were so to speak gob-smacked when they realised that we were offering them the ultimate branding, is that something that you would like?
The package set out would be that they would pay the £500 upfront, and then a monthly amount for the next twelve months, and they agreed to it. However their promise of cash then and there, was a farce, they had never intended to make the deal on the spot - shrewd to the last detail - 'Oh we can't male the decision without talking to my brother'
Then at last he got out his cheque book, and the price that we had given was cash, but then that's another story, isn't it?
...and here we were haggling over a horse........
Just where do you go from here?
Do you either walk away from a deal, or get the deal?
