How Not To Be Annoying on Twitter and Other Social Media

The worst thing you can be on any social media is annoying.

People’s personalities are always reflected in their social media accounts.  If you are in these various social media for business and to appeal to prospective clients then you cannot afford to have a devil-may-care attitude.  You should always use social media carefully and intelligently, ensuring that you are presenting your company in the best light.

Now because much of the social media are informal, it can be very easy to annoy the people within your network.
On Twitter do not send automatic direct messages to people following you to tell them to visit and follow your website.  People usually don’t bother to visit the links posted on the direct messages especially if it’s obvious that you send the same message for all your Twitter followers.  You just need to make sure that you post interesting and valuable information on Twitter so that people would be curious and interested to know what your company is about and what products you sell.  Auto-direct messages with marketing messages do NOT work.

It also annoys people when you post nothing but selling pitches.  Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and all the other social media are not market places to be used purely for selling. When you post nothing but self-promotion messages, people will stop following you. You can only post purely self-promotional tweets and messages if you are providing awesome value to clients just like what Dell does with its Twitter accounts. The computer company offers discounts and Twitter-exclusive deals to clients.  You should make sure that all your messages are helpful to the audience.

Make sure you compose varied messages and avoid posting the same messages over and over again.  It’s unbelievable how some companies post the same quotes over and over again.  People will definitely stop following you on Twitter and the other social networks if they notice that you are posting the same, old, tired messages that do not present any value to the readers.

You should also avoid flooding people feeds, walls and inboxes with messages.  Some people may find this annoying.  What you need to do is to post messages a few times each day just so people would continue following you.  But do not post useless messages every minute of every day because you may end up annoying your followers.
