Social Media: Providing People with a Voice and Platform
The biggest benefit of social media is that it provides people with a voice and a platform. Now everyone can share their views and not just a limited and powerful few.
The internet has really become an equalizing factor for how many people distribute and access information. Today, a majority of the information shared to the public are no longer controlled by an elite few. Everyone and anyone who has a computer and an internet connection can now distribute and receive information. The internet has many tools such as social media sites that allow people to connect with many others online. A person can now communicate with other people from a different country, a different culture and a completely different social and political standpoint.
The different types of social media are providing people with the voice and platform to voice their ideas, views, opinions and experiences. Social media has the power to deliver a person’s message to a very wide audience.
A valuable story can reach a person who lives half-way around the world through a person’s blog or Facebook wall or other types of social media. Whereas in traditional media, editors and other news producers have control over what kinds of stories and news reach the public, with social media people decide what stories they want to publish and the people also now have more control over the kind of information they want to receive.
Even consumers are benefiting from the “voice” that the internet provides them. Today people can let other people know the lousy experience they had with any product or service so that other people will be forewarned. People can also share good experiences and reviews online.
And because the number of companies that are using social media are increasing, consumers can also expect their grievances and issues against companies heard and acted upon. There are so many true stories about people receiving resolution about their issues and grievances regarding companies after they have posted them online.
Social media can even be an effective tool for effecting social changes because they allow people to post messages with significant social, economic or political value. With all the information that is going around in the different types of social media, they are bound to change the way people think and perceive things and ultimately their actions.
