Think Before You Tweet- Why Posting Too Quickly on Social Media Can Get You In Trouble

The advantage of Twitter is that it’s fast and easy to use. The downside is- if you’re not careful, you could get in trouble precisely because it is fast and easy.

Twitter is a fast and easy medium to use for communicating with people.  Even if Twitter tweets have a maximum character limit of 140, there are still so many things that can be conveyed through the short messages. So many negative things can be conveyed through such a short message just as a lot of positive things can be transmitted through a 140-character tweet.  It is very important to think before you tweet.  Anything you post online could be used to judge you and your business so it is very important to post tweets that will only showcase your company in a positive light.

Sometimes it’s easy to not take Twitter seriously and just post random drivel on the site. It also can be easy to forget that all your followers- all thousands or hundreds of them will instantly receive your message on their feeds. If you post anything negative on your Twitter account, your followers can easily read and spread your message and you might find yourself in a public relations fiasco. You must never say negative about anyone online because you never know when a situation will arise wherein you will need to work with that person or company that you just posted a negative message about.  Life is all about the reversal and counter-reversal of fortunes, the company or the individual you just said something negative about could rise to the top of the food chain and eat you alive.

It’s also possible that a short tweet you thought was humorous could be offensive to some of your followers.  You should try to practice tact, restraint and political correctness as much as possible.  While you it’s not possible to please everyone online, you should try to be as pleasant as possible.

You cannot afford to be garish and tactless online because your message can easily reach thousands even millions of people. Deleting an offensive or bad message online also cannot stop the message from spreading especially if the message has already been forwarded to other people.

It’s harder to issue an apology or clear the air once people react negatively to a bad tweet.  It is best to be careful and conscious of all your online actions from posting content to commenting on other people’s sites and sharing different types of media to people.
