Setting a Social Media Policy for Your Business

Setting a social media policy is important for any business.

These days it’s not uncommon to read stories about people or companies getting in trouble for the information they publish online. The internet, with the different types of social media, is making it easy for information to spread faster than you can say Twitter. There are people who still think that anything they post on their blogs can be used by others against them.

While it is not right for people to judge others quickly through a single blog post that seems off, it happens. But more than the judgments and prejudices against them that may result from their internet and social media use, individuals and companies should be more concerned about getting into legal trouble and even starting a PR nightmare with their reckless use of social media. Companies and individuals should practice restraint when they are using social media. Just because you need to get something off your chest does not mean you should rant about it online.

If you want to protect the reputation of your business and save it from any legal troubles, implement a social media policy for your business. This can also be important if you work with virtual assistants who represent your business online but don’t work in your office.

The following aspects are what you need to protect in your business:

  • That you do not get into legal trouble whether with the government, with other companies or the public.

  • That your reputation is not damaged by illegal or inappropriate comments online posted by your employees online.

  • That your employees or anyone related to your business post proprietary information online.

  • That the employee does not post anything online that could be cause for the person to lose his job.

  • You should remind your employees that you are implementing a social media policy not to trample on their freedom of speech but to protect them and the business. Tell them that they should post anything online they wouldn’t say on TV news. They should think of social media as similar to traditional media only with the greater capacity to spread news and information like wildfire.
