Social media can really do people and businesses a lot of good. Here are a few tips for new users of social media.

In recent months social media have really taken the world by storm receiving plenty of press.  Although social media have been around for at least a decade, it is only now that businesses are using them to really communicate with clients.  Companies who have been using social media in the last couple of years have really experienced some tremendous benefits from their social media use. And because social media and their benefits are now much-publicized, more people and business are interested in using them.  If you are a new user and want to learn more about taking advantage of social media, here are a few tips:

  • Use social media to publish contents as well as promote them- you can use different types of social media to publish contents. You can start a blog to discuss anything you want to. You can use Flickr to share photos. You can use social networks to connect with people and to share information.  There are many types of social media you can use and you can use them not just to share contents but to promote contents as well. You can promote your Facebook account through Twitter and vice versa; you can promote your blog through Facebook. You can use the Twitter to promote your YouTube channel. You can interchangeably use different social media for uploading contents and promoting them.
  • Target your market- upload content and use a “voice” that targets your market so that your social media efforts are not wasted.
  • Use multiple channels- if you are using social media for marketing and client engagement, use different types of social media that really reach your audience.  You should also use different materials that have consistent messages to really establish a good connection with the audience.
  • Engage clients in conversations- the more personalized your interactions are with the audience, the more effective social media become for marketing, public relations, and customer service. Clients appreciate when you talk to them directly and really address their concerns and needs individually. Keep the “social” aspect of social media and do not use them as simply advertising tools.  Hard selling hardly works in social media. They only work if your products and deals are something people are too good to refuse.
