How Social Media Affect Purchasing Behavior

Social media can have an effect on what and how consumers buy.

Social media have become part of many people’s lives.  An article published earlier this year discussed how many people check their emails first and do some reading online before they even take their breakfast. Social media have become such an integral part of people’s lives that a survey of the most commonly used words in Twitter revealed the words sleep, work, eat as among the words that people often used in the micro-blogging service. This meant that people tweeted a lot of their daily routines which included- yes, eating, sleeping and working. And because of how social media have become a major part of people’s lives, it is impossible for these networks and channels not to have an effect on how people communicate and how they live their lives.

Social media provide companies with the opportunity to send information to the public to help them sway consumer behavior to their favor.Social media can affect purchasing behavior depending on how companies decide to use them.  The market is already using social media so it’s just a matter of reaching out to them.

A company can implement better consumer engagement using social media. This involves paying attention to what your market wants, reaching out to them, listening in to their conversations, getting feedback, providing information and conversing with your social network followers individually.  When you engage clients, you are building customer loyalty.

Social media can also maintain the relevance of a brand in the eyes of consumers.  A company that uses social media to listen to client needs and is able to respond to these needs can remain relevant.  A company that is able to remain visible to consumers also projects an image of being relevant. When people no longer see you or think of your business or products then you could fail at staying relevant. It is very important for people to remember what your products are and what your business stands for the consumers to continue purchasing your products.  Once people stop thinking about your products or even stop looking at your products then that will be the end of your business.
