Using Twitter for Word-of-Mouth Marketing

Twitter has become one of the most powerful word-of-mouth tools around

With the sheer number of Twitter users posting messages in real time, it is not surprising that a piece of news posted by someone can reach people who live halfway across the globe in a matter of minutes. This is why twitter has the unique capacity to break or build-up the reputation of a product within minutes.  An influential Twitter with 1 million followers could say a company’s service sucks then that could mean bad news for a business. However if someone posts a positive review about a product or service online, that can be a good thing for the business.

Because of the power of Twitter, there is now a thing called Twitter effect. Twitter effect is when a review about a product has spread easily online causing the product to do really well or to do really poorly in sales.  The twitter effect has happened in movies in the past. A movie that did well on the first day of release but lose a large percentage of the viewers the following day could have been affected by word-of-mouth.  A movie that did not do very well on the first few days of release but gained momentum overt he next couple of days to emerge as a hit may have also been affected by Twitter and word-of-mouth.   Interest in a movie can grow quickly when the first wave of viewers post positive reviews about the movie on their Twitter accounts. This is also the case for products and services.

Companies can use Twitter and other social network for word-of-mouth marketing.  Word-of-mouth is really very effective in convincing people that a product or service is good or bad.  Personal recommendation is always best in selling.

A company can use twitter for word-of-mouth marketing by triggering people online to post information about the product from the company. Triggering people to talk about your product is not always easy because you need to be creative.  You need to make sure that you create content or material that is worth talking about.  Twitter will simply be your tool for spreading the word about your product but it only works if you have a creative plan to promote the product and a good product to begin with.
