Do Not Fall for Social Media Experts

You do not need pay exorbitant fees to people who claim to be social media “experts”

There is so much hype surrounding social media that there are people who take advantage of others by claiming they are social media experts and charging exorbitant fees to companies.  Of course this doesn’t mean that all of those who claim they are experts are fakes. There are people who have been using social media since the very beginning and have learned how to maximize their use.

But not all those who claim they are experts are really experts and not all companies need to pay expensive fees to enjoy the benefits of social media.

If you want to use social networks for marketing, PR and other aspects of your business but really do not have the budget to hire a social media manager or consultant that charges expensive fees, you have the option of hiring a good virtual assistant instead.

How can a virtual assistant help you in taking advantage of social media? The VA can help you in many ways.  First, when you hire a VA, ask the virtual assistant if he/she is knowledgeable in the kind of social media that you want to use in your business.  It can be blogging, creating and distributing videos through YouTube, creating tweets, SEO and other aspects of internet marketing.  You can then hire the VA to do all the social media tasks for you.  Virtual assistants definitely charge more affordable fees than those who claim to be experts.  The VA can do all the social media tasks and help you discover the different uses of social media for your business without the expensive fees.

Another way virtual assistant can help you gain benefits from social media is by doing all the research and forward to you links to tips, articles and other materials online on how to use social media for business.  Through this method, you need to commit to learning and doing social media tasks yourself, the virtual assistant will simply help you gain the information that you need to know more about social media so that you can take advantage of them for your business.

Lawrence - read your article on VA and social media experts on 1/24.

My comment to this is that I provided strategy and planning services to business trying to get started with social media. I am certified by the Social Media Academy www.socialmedia-academy.com and spent 22 weeks on specific strategy and assessment methodology. Even so, I do not call myself an expert in this field that is changing everyday.

I work very hard at training my clients to complete the work themselves. I have yet to find a VA who actually understands the strategy and marketing side of why uses one site versus another or a VA who spends any time on the action plan. They are however very good at completing the tasks I assign or if I give them the editorial calendar and detailed action plan.

Right up front when I start working with a client I ask about helping them build a relationship with an outside VA who I hand pick based on knowing they understand the medium we plan on working with.

So yes even I use Virtual Assistance - the smart ones who do more than regular administrative duties. I have also spent time actually training them to do the specific work I need, even at the risk of them just taking the work directly at some point.
