The Call Center Army of Five Thousand

Armed with a headset, crystal clear voices and a computer monitor, the BPO workers are ready to attack. A legion is ready to conquer the vast lands of great opportunities in the business of outsourcing.

Stream Global Services Inc. a New York listed business process outsourcing firm plans to hire 5,000 call center agents this year, 1,500 of those will be employed in a couple of months from now. They will be receiving a starting monthly salary of P.12, 000 plus a hiring bonus of P.10, 000.

R. Scott Murray the chief executive officer of Stream Global Services was still expanding and looking for possible call center site possibly in Cavite to add to his existing nine call center areas already in the Philippines. The supposed 5,000 army of well spoken call agents will spread out to the centers in Eastwood Libis, Quezon City, Makati City, Muntinlupa City, Pampanga, Mandaluyong City and Cebu City.

This year Stream Global will be investing ten million dollars in technology in the Philippines which is twice more than they invested last year. Around $ 160 million or around 20% of Stream Global’s worldwide operations is in the Philippines.

25.5 percent stake in Stream Global was owned by the Ayala Group of companies, primarily through eTelecare Global Solutions Inc., before they engaged in a stock exchanged deal and merged with the company.

In 22 countries Stream Global has spread its operations and has hired 30,000 strong workforces. But Mr. Murray sees the Philippines with a great potential as the next India If the country will improve its educational and transport systems and offer the business process outsourcing firms more incentives.

A great deal of investment is at stake with the Filipinos as better English speakers than most of the other 22 countries.   Stream Global might even plan to hire more than the supposed 5,000.

British firm Catch Friday Enterprises, head of operations James Pitt, with it's call center situated in Davao, recently doubled it's capacity, and increased it's staff four fold, much to the delight of the local community in the Philippines, Pitt with a background in investment banking has been a great asset, and recently completed the development of a large building-sector website into the US, getting it ready for seed funding using a range of online and offline channels. He has also worked to build an Italian portal into a leading food and wine portals using a mixture of voice and online work. He has done some great work with a leading UK-based services company to build and populate its CRM system.
