Mistakes to Avoid When Using Social Media

If you want to take advantage of social media for business, make sure you avoid these mistakes.

It’s easy to use different types of social media but it’s also easy to commit some mistakes.  If people aren’t careful with their use of social media then they might not get the best outcome.  Here are some of the most common mistakes you should avoid so that you can take full advantage of the benefits of social media:

  • Leaving profiles incomplete- as much as possible, try to complete all the information on your profile page.  Put in some thought in the information you will put in there and make sure the pieces of information you include are useful and present your business in the best light.  When people like what they read in your blog, Twitter stream and other online accounts then the first thing they usually do is check your account profile.  Make sure you have all the fields completed and that they provide good information about you or your business.
  • Not providing new contents regularly- you may be a fantastic and creative writer but if you only post fresh content every several months, then you will still lose your readers.  It is best to update your social accounts as often as possible so that you can keep the interest of the public.  Of course the quality of contents also matter. You shouldn’t update for the sake of updating. You should make sure that you publish meaningful contents online.
  • When you let personal opinions leak to your business accounts- it is good to be as personal in your interactions online as possible. But there is also danger in letting your personal opinions known especially if the issue being discussed can offend.  There are certain issues that are sensitive for some people and for your business’ sake it is best not to antagonize anyone online.  There are some issues that you don’t want to touch on simply because you might end up arguing over many people whose views you cannot change.
  • Building fake relationships- make sure that you are online to build sincere connections with people. Do not fake it.  You don’t have to be friends with every single person on your network if you are using your social account for business.  Just make sure that your interactions are sincere and that you do not pretend to like someone you don’t.  Just keep things casual and sincere.
  • Being pushy- being too pushy online won’t always work. Make sure you work with people and do soft-selling, instead of hard-selling.
