Revitalizing Public Relations

Social media are affecting public relations in business.

Public relations never went away, in fact it has come to greater significance in the last several years.  And with social media now becoming a large part of people’s lives companies are also taking advantage of them for PR. Public relations are about dealing with the public. The area is very broad and can integrate all the other aspects of the business from corporate communications to marketing to customer service. PR is very liquid and adjusts to the need of the business and to the available communication channels.  What remains the same are the goals as well as the basic rules to achieving the goals. Good communication is good communication no matter the channel or the method. There are basic rules to communicating that all public relations professionals must understand. The difference now is that messages are transmitted faster than you can say- sent!  This means that the already careful communication methods usually applied in public relations are now more careful because any misstep can really blow up into a big problem.

The internet can easily make something, anything viral. This means that just as a company-initiated campaign can easily spread online even negative information about a business can spread quickly too.  Just think of the pizza store video that was released last year showing two employees goofing around in the kitchen doing silly and unsanitary things to the food. That video spread online and within 24 hours was viewed by millions of people around the world.  Imagine the power of the internet.  Something could easily spread online because the whole world does not sleep all at the same time. Information you weren’t aware was being spread about your business could easily spread while you were asleep. This is why it is very important to ensure that you have an active PR department in your business. Or even if you do not have one whole department taking care of your PR, that there is someone in your business that is really in charge of your public relations.  So not only do you have to adjust to the changing landscape of public relations in terms of the channels, you also have to make sure that you are quick to reply or to manage situations.

One of the ways you can adjust to the changes in public relations brought about by social media is to hire a virtual assistant to help you out. As PR becomes revitalized so should your business.
